Faza a doua în Euroliga masculină de baschet – ediția 2011/12, intitulată TOP 16, se apropie de sfârșit. Acest lucru înseamnă că în curând vom afla numele celor mai bune opt echipe de club de pe bătrânul continent. După disputarea primelor patru etape, din totalul de șase, nicio echipă nu și-a asigurat calificarea din punct de vedere matematic. Montepaschi Siena și FC Barcelona Regal, adică campioanele Italiei respectiv Spaniei, sunt neînvinse în această fază a competiției și au șanse foarte mari de a se califica. În aceste grupe Unicaja Malaga și Zalgiris Kaunas au pierdut toate meciurile disputate până în prezent. Matematic nu sunt eliminate însă, ele sunt obligate să învingă la diferențe mai mari decât au pierdut jocurile cu echipele situate pe locurile 2 și 3 cu obligativitatea ca ambele aceste echipe să piardă confruntările rămase din faza a doua a Euroligii. Cu alte cuvinte este aproape imposibil ca aceste formații să mai aibă șanse reale de calificare. Dar nu se știe niciodată.

Celelalte două grupe prezintă situații diferite. CSKA Moscova are 3-1, Olympiakos Pireu și Galatasaray Istanbul au 2-2 fiecare, iar Anadolu Efes are acum 1-3. Rușii au prima șansă la calificare, dar întâlnesc pe Olympiakos în runda a 5-a. În aceeași etapă reprezentantele Turciei se vor confruntadirect, învinsa urmând să aibă reduse spre minim șansele de calificare. În schimb, Panathinaikos Atena și Unics Kazan au strâns câte tre victorii și o înfrângere până la această oră, într-o grupă din care mai fac parte Emporio Armani Milano respectiv Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul. Cele din urmă au câte o victorie și trei eșecuri. Așadar, în momentul de față, deși nu avem nicio echipă sigur calificată în sferturile de finală, e greu de imaginat că, pe baza rezultatelor înregistrate până în prezent, respectiv a modului de alcătuire al clasamentului în baschet, echipe ca și FC Barcelona, Montepaschi Siena, Unics Kazan sau Panathinaikos Atena să nu se califice. Pe de altă parte, ținând cont de parcursul foarte solid și valoarea lotului, CSKA Moscova se află într-o situație favorabilă de a se califica în playoff.

Miza, așadar, este calificarea în playoff. Sau faza sferturilor de finală. Acolo unde se va juca în sistemul cel mai bun din cinci meciuri. Aici o precizare importantă se referă la faptul că echipele care își câștigă grupa în TOP 16 beneficiază de avantajul terenului propriu în sferturile de finală ale competiției.
